Lovely Weather, My Exhibition at Oriel Ynys Mon and the Prospect of Beaumaris Festival from 19th – 25th May

The weather seems to have settled into a calm sunny phase and we have had both morning coffee and lunch sitting on the terrace, stripped down to t-shirts and listening to birdsong. We did manage to fit some work in between!

It’s a good job we did – on Wednesday and Thursday this week we will be helping to put up my Exhibition, ‘Textiles in Transition’ in the Main Gallery at Oriel Ynys Mon (The Anglesey Gallery) in Llangefni: the opening is on Saturday 25th April between 12:00 and 14:00.

I’ll also be teaching two workshops in the gallery:
‘Folded Paper Applique’ on Tuesday 12th May 10:00 – 16:00
and
‘Notan’ on Monday 1st June 10:00 – 16:00.

The exhibition runs from 25th April until 7th June. If you’re on Anglesey please call in at the Oriel to see my work – it also has a gallery dedicated to Sir Kyffin Williams paintings and drawings, a history gallery which is very child friendly and a cafe. We’re very proud of Oriel Ynys Mon on Anglesey.

Beaumaris has an annual Festival which this year falls between 19th and 25th of May: it is very well renowned and concentrates on music with an international flavour, but also includes a craft fair, wood turning, poetry readings, lectures and an exhibition of art.

Beaumaris is such a beautiful little town, with its medieval castle, Victorian pier, historic buildings and lots of places to eat: the Festival is at home in these pleasant surroundings. Look for www.beaumaris festival.com

Lovely November day

We have had some very mixed weather for the past few days: we even had a first dusting of snow on the highest mountains, but it only lasted a few hours and today brought a balmy 15°C along with blue skies and sunshine.

The fuschia in a tub outside the cottage doesn’t seem to have realised it’s autumn yet.

Daf and I enjoyed lunch with friends, Paul and Peter, who were cycling on Route 5 from Holyhead to Bangor, which brought them near Coed y Berclas. It was great to see them and catch up with their news.

As they cycled up the drive to complete their ride, Daf and I decided the day was too lovely to stay indoors, so we went for a walk along the lane to the lake, where we watched waterfowl while the sun was getting lower in the sky. We walked back home just as daylight was fading into dusk.

This evening I have plans to get some more work done on the two quilted wall hangings I am preparing for the next Cwilt Cymru travelling exhibition – ‘Connection’.

What a lovely day.

Anglesey – Island of Quilts ‘Falling into Place’ Exhibition

The Isle of Anglesey is renowned for many things: beautiful beaches, water-sports, lovely walks, stunning views, wide range of specialist produce, history, golf – the list goes on and on.

However one thing you may not be aware of is the strength of Art/Crafts on the Island and one area in particular has a large following: Textile Art, especially in the form of Patchwork and Quilting. In case the only image which just popped into your mind was an old fashioned quilt on a Victorian bed, you will be in for a surprise. Bed quilts are wonderful, of course, but there is so much more, and it’s all happening here on Anglesey.

Take, for example, ‘Falling into Place’ currently on show at Canolfan Ucheldre, Holyhead. This is an exhibition of work by people of all ages who have attended my Courses and Individual Workshops and I am so very proud of all of them and what they have achieved.

If you can visit, I’m sure you’ll enjoy seeing the work.

There are many groups working in textiles on Anglesey and we are very well supported by specialist shops: Tan Lan, Copperfield, Kit ‘n Kaboodle, Siop Eleni,The Sewing Machine Shop. Contacts for all of these are available on my site, www.dotrussell.co.uk. Envious visitors can’t believe we pack so much into one island: they think we’re spoilt – yes we are, and we love it. Anglesey really is the Island of Quilts.

Don’t forget that you can join the fun by having a one to one, or small group, tailored workshop with me while you are holidaying on Anglesey/North Wales. You can even stay at Cottage at Coed y Berclas.
